Using and Rotating Food Storage

It is important that we know how to use our food storage. The easiest way is to incorporate it in to our regular diet and menus. There are several cookbooks and recipes that have food storage related ingredients.

We need to also rotate it. Click here to see a chart showing the shelf life of common food storage items.

Click here to see more about how long "longer term" food storage items last.

I'm LDS too and the last I heard we don't have to rotate the wheat and beans and sugar other stuff anymore...had you heard that too? Because the shelf-life is so long...

Wheat does last over 30 years. However, I have a lot from 1992 that I have been trying to use. Plus, you need know how to use it. That is something I have been trying to work on. It is really nice though that it lasts so long! It's important to know what the shelf life of your food storage items are.

What I do is buy the bulk bags from the Home Storage Center. We stop on our way home from the temple (we're in Michigan), get some bags, and eat from those. Since I have 2 small children I can't devote time to go up and can as often as I would need to in order to rotate. (Also in order to rotate you need a great system, one I don't have.) The church came out with the statement that we don't have to eat what we store since the shelf-life is so long now. This is new! And it's refreshing news! It also means that once we can our food, we can leave it alone...And it runs counter to what we've been taught, but for me it's been an awesome revelation. (It was in one of the Food Storage pamphlets.)

PS found your site on MSM, love that...
