Self-Reliance Articles

This article discusses how long food lasts based on the latest research.
Click here for the full article.

Read these 3 articles:

The Times in Which We Live by Gordon B. Hinckley

Load Up the Pantry by Brett Arends

Is It Time To Stockpile Food? --an article that is against stockpiling

What a difference there is among them! The last one really goes against everything I believe in. I think that it is important to always have a supply because you never know what could happen, whether it be job loss or a natural disaster, or simply using that food to share with those in need. What do you think about these articles?

Water Supply

Here are some options for building your water supply:

You need 21 gallons per person for a two week supply.

Don’t forget to include bleach in your supply for purification.

Large gallon barrels, more expensive option, price ranges depending on supplier.
Water bottle cases $3.99/24 (or cheaper...watch for sales!)
Mylar bags $3.49/1 holds 5 gallons (http://www.beprepared.com/)
Water pouches (4-8 oz) $.35/1 (http://www.beprepared.com/)

I always try to buy a case of water when I make a big trip to the grocery store, or at a warehouse store like Sam's Club or Costco. Then I rotate this water out. Don't forget about the five gallon jugs for your water cooler. Those count towards your supply!

72 Hour Kits and Links

There are many different approaches to completing your 72 hour kit. Work on your own kit based on your family's needs. Some choose to purchase pre-made kits, but you can also put it together yourself. Do what fits in your budget and build it over time.

I have found a lot of small items for my kits at Target in the $1 spot. I also like to small water pouches available at http://www.beprepared.com/ for.35 to go in the kits. They have a shelf life of 5 years, so you do not have to worry about rotating it out of your kit.
