There are many different approaches to completing your 72 hour kit. Work on your own kit based on your family's needs. Some choose to purchase pre-made kits, but you can also put it together yourself. Do what fits in your budget and build it over time.
I have found a lot of small items for my kits at Target in the $1 spot. I also like to small water pouches available at http://www.beprepared.com/ for.35 to go in the kits. They have a shelf life of 5 years, so you do not have to worry about rotating it out of your kit.
