This site started out as a church related calling, so I would like to keep it mainly for that purpose. I will continue to post best grocery deals on both sites, but content on each site will be different.

Save Money on Baby Food

Cindy mentioned that she will be making baby food with the carrots she got from the Target Deal.

Making your own baby food is really easy and cheap! You don't have so spend lots of time.

Here is what I did:

Buy the product you would like to make into baby food. (fruits, veggies, meat)
Prepare, mash, puree (depending on food).
Make a lot at one time.
Pour it into ice cube trays.
Freeze.
Pop into ziploc bags.
Defrost when ready to use. The ice cubes let you choose portion size.

More Tips:

Buy really cheap ice cube trays at Wal-Mart.
Buy your produce on sale or from a local co-op, such as Bountiful Baskets.
Use the internet for tips on preparing. I like Wholesome Baby Food.
If you have a insulated lunch bag and ice pack, you can take it on the go.
Have some commercially processed baby food for emergencies, if you don't have access to heating up food, etc.

Can't sleep, too excited...

While Cailyn and Taylor are wiped out taking naps, I never can seem so sleep while on vacation. So here I am. :)

Here are a few things I have learned from this vacation:

It pays to be an annual passholder:

You get 15% off most dining.
10% off merchandise orders over $10.
Extra benefits exclusive to passholders. We got to see what the Imagineers have in store for California Adventure. It is going to be AMAZING when it is renovated. Some things will be available as early as Spring 2010. Completion is 2012.
It pays for it self in two trips.
You get free parking.

The Character Outlet in Fullerton is mostly the Disney rejects that wouldn't sell in the park. You may have better luck at the traveling outlets (there was one in Mesa last fall). Go here for locations. I got a ton of stuff last year that was great.

If you are a Disney Visa Cardholder, you get:

A free 5x7 photo from exclusive character meet-n-greet. (last time we had Chip and Dale, this time it was Pluto)

Bargain Shopping, Scriptures, and Ramblings

So I have been on the computer the past few days more than normal. Here are my reasons:

I'm on fall break!!
I recently got the new IPod touch and a MacBook after I killed my "other" computer (it was a PC...what can I say?). I have been working on getting my music collection on to my computer which has been taking forever. Try adding over 10 years with of music x 2.
I love my MAC! I have been working on all kinds of projects, so I have been on here quite a bit.

If you are affiliated with ASU, or another university, Apple runs a great back to school promo each year. I bought my MacBook and IPod, but my IPod was free after rebate. Plus, through the university, you get free AppleCare for 3 years (a 3 year warranty).

My brother convinced me to switch and I don't know how I functioned without it. It is too late for the promo this year, but look for it in July-August. I will post details next year. Taylor wants one now to be cool like me. :)

Anyway, if you have an IPhone or an IPod touch, they now have the Scriptures available for a free download. It is basic, but great to have wherever you go. Click here for more info and the guy that made the scriptures more accessible.

So, as I was reading last night (while listening to music of course...) I came across this scripture in Jacob 2: 18-19.

"But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God. And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good—to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted."

It got me thinking about helping others. I am not rich by the world's standards, but it sure feels like I am when I open my closets and cabinets. The season for giving is coming up, but I know we should be doing this all along.

With that being said, I would like to start getting boxes together for those in need. With the way the economy is right now, we really are in a position to help others in need. If we all put a few items together, we can make a big difference.

As an ending note, I LOVE FRY'S!! The have the best customer service and the best prices. I have even more loyalty towards them after a bad experience at Safeway. Fry's treats me like I am royalty with the deals I get. "Other" stores sometimes make me feel like I am breaking the law by using a coupon.

If you have had a good experience at Fry's, or any other store, don't forget to call into customer service to let them know. They like to hear the good comments too.

Since Register Rewards are considered manufacturer's coupons, Fry's will take them. I don't know if this is something they will always do, but they had no problem taking mine due to the promotion going on. It scanned in with no problems. Don't forget about the Dimetapp deal that is giving back $10 RR.

Box Tops and Recycling

I have learned that through using coupons, there are many opportunities to keep on giving.

Before I couponed, I could never afford (or justify) the cost of name brand products. We used to live on MarketPantry, Kroger, and GreatValue Brand.

Now, it seems every product I have is from General Mills. If you buy General Mills products, don't forget to save the Box Tops and turn them in to your school.

If you don't have any children going to school, I would be happy to take them. These really do add up for the school. Our PTO does an amazing job, and this funding provides many extras for the school.

Arizona ranks 49 out of 50 (50 being the lowest) in the amount spent per student. The only state lower than ours is Utah.

Go to the AEA's website for more information on how Arizona ranks. The additional funding from BoxTops will impact our students and Arizona's future.

Recycling Papers

Next, if you driveway looks like the Arizona Republic has take over and one, don't forget to recycle all of those papers. If you take them to one of the school's recycling bins, your school gets money for these. Who knew all of this would help out your school so much.

Just keep a bin in your garage for all paper and take it to the school when it gets full.

Recycling Bags

Lastly, recycle the bags your newspapers are in. I use them for doggie duty (I don't use plastic bags at the store, so this is pretty much all the plastic we see... go here to see more information on reusable bags). You can also recycle them at most grocery stores.

I am not an environmentalist, but I care about the environment. Hopefully my footprint left behind won't be as noticeable.

Early Christmas Shopping Deals

I usually buy gifts for Christmas throughout the year when I get them super cheap. Then I just pick stuff out of my stash.

Disneyshopping.com always has great deals.

The Disney Store has a ton of stuff on clearance right now (Playhouse Disney, Princess items, etc.).

At Disneyshopping they have a lot of Little Einsteins items on clearance.

If you sign up at disneyshopping.com for e-mail alerts you can save even more.

My favorite deals are when the PJ Pals Pajamas go on sale. They sale for $16.50 at the Disney Store. They usually have sales twice a year to get them around $5 each.

Prescription Coupons

There were two prescription coupons in today's paper.

There was a $10 for a NEW or transferred prescription (we don't get NEW coupons to often, so hold on to it in case you get sick) in the Target ad.

There was a $25 Walgreen's coupon that does not expire until January 09. This is for transferred prescriptions.

Keep in mind that CVS and Fry's accept competitor's coupons.

Save on Food: Get a hotel with a kitchen or at least a fridge. Plan meals before you go and bring your food with you in a cool chest (if you are driving.

If you have an annual pass, you will save 15% on most dining locations throughout the park.

Save on Tickets: An annual pass will save you a ton if you plan on going frequently. Buy them before you go. There are also discounts as Costco, and for military.

Save on Time: Use the FREE FastPass system to save time on waiting in line. Go here.

Save on Souvenirs: Since I love to shop, I have found the following keep my appetite curbed-

Set your budget before you leave. Either have cash set aside for souvenirs, or buy a Disney Gift Card ahead of time.
Buy a plain Mr. Potato before you go (they are $6 at Amazon, Walmart, even CVS). At the toy shop in California Adventure you can fill a box with Disney themed potato head parts. If you don't put the potato head in, then you have more room for parts and get more for your money. It is $20 to fill a box. We did this last time, and this is still one of Cailyn's favorite toys to play with.
Go to the Disney Character Warehouse Outlet for great clearance deals. This is located in Fullerton, a few miles away. Go to MouseSavers for directions and address. Plus, there is a link to a 10% off coupon.
Buy items before you go (Disney toys at Wal-Mart/Target, Disney Store, www.disneyshopping.com, Disney outlets, etc.) This will save you a ton.

The Fiber One and the Carribou Bar coupons will most likely be free if they go on sale soon.

The Pizza Crust often goes on sale for $10, so those will be good ones.

The $.50/1 Kid's Yoplait is good. They are usually $2.99 at Fry's, sometimes less. But my daughter LOVES her Dora yogurt so we always buy it. At least it will be less for a while!

The Electrasol $2.25/1 q will make a great deal at Wal-Mart or Target (YMMV). Check out the price at your local store, but it is usually less than $3.00. Otherwise, Fry's sometimes has these go on sale for $2.99. Time to stock up! Walgreen's has had these on sale before too, but I usually just buy mine at Target. Uses for Sara Lee Bread

I get six Sunday papers, so I was thinking about what I was going to do with all of my FREE bread. They are expiring soon, so I needed to get them. (I can't refuse FREE bread!)

These coupons were in the 8/17 Red Plum insert.

Make ahead PB&J sandwiches. Simply put PB on both sides of the bread and jelly in the middle (this prevents it from going soggy). Put in a sandwich bag and put in the freezer. Just take it out a few hours before you want to eat it. These are just like the Smucker's Uncrustables, but MUCH cheaper. You can also cut them into shapes to make it more fun. My daughter LOVES her Mickey Sandwiches...
Have BLT's (we all have plenty of FREE bacon!)

Saving Money vs. Spending

I am a shopping addict.

Corporate America knows exactly how to lure me in to buying their products.

It is so easy to get whatever you want without thinking about the cost.

It is hard not to fall into the trap of "keeping up with the Jones's".

However, I am trying to avoid unnecessary spending. One way that I do this is obviously through bargain shopping. I have cut my grocery bills dramatically. I used to spend $400/month. I have cut that in half at least, usually spending $30-$50/week (depends on the deals...).

I was recently complaining to my husband that I hated our carpet. To me it looked dirty, and I have always wanted wood floors. So, I have been determined, even looking around, that we would be able to install these within the next few months (or when we do our 08 tax returns).

I got to thinking that this is really taking me away from my goals of becoming debt free. So, I thought about why I wanted the new floors so bad. Mainly because the carpets were dirty. Especially with the storms we have been having, our dog Bella has been having more accidents at night. She is too scared to go out when it is thundering.

Here was my solution (although, one day, when we are out of debt, I still want to upgrade our flooring):

I needed to figure out how to get my carpets clean.

I did a 30/70 solution of peroxide to water. Then I added 1/2 tsp of baking soda. I sprayed this on the pet stains. Then I soaked it up with a towel. (This was to get rid of the odor)
Then I cleaned my carpets with my steam cleaner using a water and vinegar solution.
I went over them again with clean, warm water.

They are really clean and the smell is out! Amazing!

I think I may add a couple of bar stools, and refinish my dining room table.

Cost: about $150.

Savings: thousands...

Feeling of being in more control: priceless :)

Do you have any great ideas for easy cleaning without harsh chemical products? I think it is crazy that there are so many products for cleaning. I would really like to get back to the basics in that area.

I know when I first started couponing, I would buy something that I thought was a "good" deal, and then the next week it would be free or almost free. It is sometimes like a gamble.

So, I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list that will help everyone.

This will allow everyone to collaborate and comparison shop. Sometimes Costco and Wal-Mart are still the better deals. There are also coupons that many people know are a great deal at certain stores (like the Huggies Clean Team wipes and FREE Johnson's Buddies Bars).

Coupon Organizing When You Don't Have Time to Clip!

I have had to take a step back from my binder. I simply don't have time to clip each and every coupon I use. Here is the method to my coupon madness:

Get a file folder bin.
Put in some hanging file folders.
Disperse about 26-30 file folders throughout the hanging ones.
Don't label anything just yet...
When you get your coupons on Sunday, take the inserts out.
Collate the inserts.
Place the inserts in the first available file folder.
Label the folder with the date (i.e. 8/24)
Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Walla! Your coupons are all organized.

Rice Recipes

Rice Pilaf

2 Tbsp. margarine
1/3 c. finely chopped celery
1/4 c. green onions, including tops finely chopped
1 c. uncooked rice
3 tsp. chicken bullion dissolved in 3 c. hot water

Melt margarine in skillet. Add onions, celery, and rice. Stir until rice is slightly browned. Pour in water with dissolved bullion. Cover tightly and cook over low heat for about 25 minutes until moisture is absorbed and rice is tender.

Spanish Rice

Heat up about 2 Tbsp. of cooking oil in skillet. Add about 1 c. of long grain rice. Brown the rice, stirring it until it is slightly brown. Add diced onion and saute. Add cold water, enough to cover the rice (about 3 cups). Add 2-3 Tbsp. Knorr's tomato bullion, and add a clove of garlic. Cover tightly. Turn down heat as soon as it starts to boil. Do not stir the rice. Cook for about 25 minutes or until the water is absorbed by the rice. (Note: If you do not have tomato bullion, you can use chicken bullion and add a little tomato sauce instead.)

Ray Family Tortillas

Here is my favorite recipe using long term food storage items. I usually cook a crock pot of beans for about 6-7 hours. I only add a little bit of salt to my beans.

Ray Family Tortilla Recipe

Ingredients:

3 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
¼ c. oil
1-1 ½ c. hot water

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients. Add oil and hot water until dough feels soft and pliable. Wrap in plastic wrap and let dough rest for 10-20 minutes. Make into 12 balls. Roll out and cook on medium-high griddle (about 10 seconds for the first side, 5 seconds for the second). Serve with beans.

Alternate:

For fry bread, use 3 ½ c. flour and add 2 tbsp. sugar. Roll out and slice, or form small circles the thickness of sugar cookies. Fry in medium high oil and cool on rack or paper towels.

I recently gave a box of food away to someone in need, but some of the items I put in were really hard for me to give away because I didn't feel I had a lot of it for my own use. The next week, there were some great deals and I was able to replenish my stock, plus more. I really felt blessed for this and I was able to give more. (Time to put together another food box...)

Please remember why we are doing this. It is to help assist others and provide for our families. I hope we can all strive to do what is right. I do not want to seem like I am on a high horse, but I really feel strongly about honesty. (I am that weirdo that takes something back into the store that I wasn't charged for because it was on the bottom of my cart...at least my conscience is clear).

It is not about how we handle ourselves when people are watching, but who we are when no one is watching. I know that I strive to do what is right and live the gospel. I hope we can all listen to the wise advice from our prophets and continue to be a "peculiar" people by choosing the right.

Hand Crank Grain Mill

I bought this mill from ebay a month ago. It is also available from amazon.com. I had been trying to get the same one, but was labeled under the Back to Basics brand for over a month. However, it was out of stock and on back order everywhere I looked.

It costs about 69.95 and does not require electricity.

I made my first loaves of wheat bread using a kitchen aid recipe and it turned out great.

It's a great way to start using your long term food storage.

I am very happy with this grinder.

Anyone have any great recipes using freshly ground wheat flour?

CVS Coupon and Raincheck Policy

After having problems with a manager not accepting a coupon because it was worth more than the sale price, I contacted corporate.

Also, in regards to ECB items, they are supposed to issue a raincheck for the item, minus the ECBs.

I made a photobook and was told they were out of the covers when I went to scan the ticket. I am okay with the fact that they were out, but someone should have said something or posted a sign to let customers they were out BEFORE I spent 20 minutes making it. When I asked for a raincheck, she said that they could not do that for ECB items. Here is the e-mail from corporate. I printed it out and will take it into the stores with me. So we should ALWAYS be able to receive a raincheck for ECB items if they are out. Looks like Rittenhouse and Ocotillo will be issuing a lot of rainchecks because they are out of things so often.

Coupon Binder:

I use a binder with baseball card holders to organize my coupons. They can be found at Target and Wal-Mart near the baseball cards for about $5/pack. It is a easy visual way to see all of my coupons quickly.

The first half is food items. The second half is non food items. I used printer labels and placed them on the actual card holder pages. Some like to use dividers, but I think they take up too much space in my already large binder.

I have a small coupon organizer labeled by store that I put my coupons in when I go shopping. I got it for $1 at the Dollar Spot in Target. I believe they still have them there with the back to school supplies. I also have a small one simply devoted to CVS. I have each transaction separted in that organizer and keep all of my CVS CRTs and ECBs in that one.

More on Organizing:

I don't clip all of my coupons. I only clip the ones that I know I will more than likely use. I ask myself if it is something we get a great price on, would I buy it? I will also clip coupons I know I can give to others, or use for charitable donations.

I don't throw away the coupons I did not clip. I have a hanging file folder bin that I got at Wal-Mart for around $8 and I have about 25 file folders. Each week I label a folder with the date of the inserts and place those unclipped coupons in the bin. That way if there is something I want to use that I didn't clip I can easily find it. You have to do what works for you. Some people don't like the binder because they think it takes too much time. I don't think it takes much time, mainly because I don't clip every single coupon from the paper. I usually file them while I am watching TV.

Cashiers and Long Term Storage

Often when I check out, cashiers are often amazed at the quantity of items I purchase. (Sidenote: I always get these things at rock bottom prices).

I recently had a cashier asking me if I was preparing for Armageddon. We had a laugh.

I guess in a way I am. I am also preparing for risk of financial hardship (you can never predict the future). I am preparing for any type of unexpected event. I know that my family would be provided for. I also am able to give to others in ways that I could not if I did not bargain shop. Plus, I LOVE shopping and this gets my fix while providing for my family and not going broke.

In response to the Armageddon comment, I love the following quote.

"The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah" (Ezra Taft Benson, "Prepare for the Days of Tribulation," Ensign, Nov. 1980, 33).

Some may think I am crazy, but I am just trying to be self reliant with what I have.

Education and Music Classes

One of the principles for self-reliance is education. Church leaders have counseled members to get all of the education they can. This is easy for me since I am still in school and teach as well. However, there are many other disciplines where I am still learning. I have the black thumb of death, and can't seem to keep plants alive. I am trying to learn so I can begin my own garden this fall. (Maybe this will be a topic for the next meeting, with someone who has experience presenting...let me know if you are interested!) I think no matter what position you are in whether it is formal education or informal, there is always time to learn and grow. President Hinckley speaks of education in the following quote:

"Get all the education you can, I wish to say to the young people. Cultivate skills of mind and hands. Education is the key to opportunity. The Lord has placed upon you, as members of this Church, the obligation to study and to learn of things spiritual, yes, but of things temporal also. Acquire all of the education that you can, even if it means great sacrifice while you are young. You will bless the lives of your children. You will bless the Church because you will reflect honor to this work" (Gordon B. Hinckley, Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley [1997], 172).

My biggest challenge is fitting in the spiritual education. I need to get better about that. Does anyone have any suggestions on how they fit scripture reading into their daily schedules?

On another note, I believe in providing many learning opportunities for children at a young age. Last summer we took Cailyn to Kindermusik classes where she was able to learn about music and sign language. She absolutely loved it.

I received an e-mail last night that Kindermusik will now take place at the Villages at Queen Creek Clubhouse on Saturdays only. There are classes geared towards 18 months to 7 years. I am definitely enrolling Cailyn now that it is closer and works with my work schedule. It is a pretty affordable program. Just thought I would pass this information along because I was so excited to be able to get Cailyn back into this program! Reusable Grocery Bags

Fry's, Albertson's and Basha's will all give you $.05 off your grocery bill per bag you bring into the store. It applies to plastic or reusable bags. You may need to remind your cashier to give you this discount. Because of this discount, I have had cashiers give me $.10 when I was buying items that were free.

My favorite is the Trader Joe's bags. They cost $.99 and are extremely durable. They will eventually pay for themselves. Mine have been paid for over and over again and I am also keeping plastic bags out of the landfills.

I also use a insulated bag that I got at Costco for my cold items. This is especially nice when you go to a store that is far. It's also great keeping food cold on long trips.

Another favorite bag of mine is the IKEA blue bag. It is only $.59 and I use them for everything from laundry (this is the BEST space saving laundry basket ever) to picking up the toys in the living room and placing them back in the child zone to shopping at IKEA (of course!). They have also proved useful for traveling.

Plus, I really love bags. As a child my mom called me the "bag lady" because I always drug several of the around the house filled with toys and canned goods. I was a born shopper! It is my humble opinion that a girl can never have too many bags.

I always feel good that I am on my way towards working on a nice stockpile, but knowing that I have what I need for my family helps me sleep at night.

This article is addressed to priesthood holders, but has great points for everyone.

Here are some highlights quotes I liked from the article:

I am thankful that my husband doesn't think I am completely crazy with my OCD (obsessive coupon disorder). He knows that I am supporting him in our family's preparedness plan and that this allows us to help and serve others through these hard times we are all facing.

I love the way that the church is now focusing on telling members to work on a small supply first and then gradually building. Buying more than what you need when it is at its cheapest is a great way to do this. Plus, when you start building up your short term supply, you can then focus on also getting long term supply. I like to shop the gently used consignment clothes for my daughter. If you buy a size bigger when things are on sale, you can get some great deals.

My favorite store is Once Upon a Child. Their website is www.ouac.com. About every 6 months they have a moonlight madness sale where you can save up to 70% off their low prices. I got several pairs of Old Navy and Baby Gap jeans that look almost brand new for only a few dollars. She is set on jeans until she is about 3 or 4.

In AZ, they are located at Val Vista and Baseline. Sign up for e-mail offers and receive $5 off your next purchase. Plus, you get updated on all of their great sales and discounts.

Water Supply

Here are some options for building your water supply:

You need 21 gallons per person for a two week supply.

Don’t forget to include bleach in your supply for purification.

Large gallon barrels, more expensive option, price ranges depending on supplier.
Water bottle cases $3.99/24 (or cheaper...watch for sales!)
Mylar bags $3.49/1 holds 5 gallons (http://www.beprepared.com/)
Water pouches (4-8 oz) $.35/1 (http://www.beprepared.com/)

I always try to buy a case of water when I make a big trip to the grocery store, or at a warehouse store like Sam's Club or Costco. Then I rotate this water out. Don't forget about the five gallon jugs for your water cooler. Those count towards your supply!
